Massachusetts' Tanglewood : Free Tickets & Special Programs Make a Great Family Destination
Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, located in Lenox, Massachusetts in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains. For the 2008 season, Tanglewood is offering an array of programs that make it more convenient and more enjoyable to bring the entire family. Information about all of them is available at the Tanglewood Visitors Center and at www.tanglewood.org.
Through its Tanglewood for Kids program, free lawn tickets will be available to all children ages 12 and under. Up to four such tickets are given per individual parent/guardian and can be picked up the day of the any concert at the Tanglewood Box Office. All children must sit with their parent/guardian during the performances. For students over 12, Tanglewood offers 50% discounts for lawn tickets for Friday evening BSO concerts. All students need to do is present a valid student ID at the Main Box Office on the night of the performance.
On Sundays at noon and during Saturday morning open rehearsals, Tanglewood is also offering their popular Kids' Corner, where children who are accompanied by an adult who has a ticket to that day's main performance are invited and encouraged to take part in musical and craft-related projects that are supervised and supported by BSO staff.
Also on Sundays, the Watch and Play program involves younger guests in a series of lively discussions about instruments, concert themes, and/or musical concepts. The program takes place at 1pm in the Chamber Music Hall. Tickets to the Sunday afternoon performances are required for admission.
On July 5, Tanglewood will officially open the 2008 season with a performance of Part I of Berlioz's grand two-part opera "Les Troyens" (The Trojans). The same night, Tanglewood will also host their annual Berkshire Night, for which area residents with valid identification may obtain two free tickets per person (subject to availability). Before the Berkshire Night concert, guides will offer free tours of the Tanglewood grounds, and children may take part in an instrument petting zoo at the Visitors Center. For more information on Berkshire Night, call the Tanglewood Volunteer Office at 413/637-5393.
On August 23 at 2:30pm in Ozawa Hall, Tanglewood will present its annual Family Concert. This year, the interactive performance will be of the beloved classic "Tubby the Tuba" by Paul Tripp and George Kleinsinger. The concert will feature principal tubist Mike Roylance and other members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Prior to the show, families will be invited to a special activity event at 1:30. Tickets for the Family Concert are free for children ages 12 and under and $10 for each adult.
